Depression is a deeply personal experience. No two people feel it the same way, and no two journeys toward health and healing look alike.
Who is at risk of depression?
Depression can affect anyone. Emotional wellbeing is shaped by a combination of factors which could be any combination of biological, psychological or social. Some things that may increase risk include:

Having a family history of depression
Physical health problems
Psychological:

Social isolation
What are the symptoms of depression?

Persistent sadness, anxiousness or "empty" mood
Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
Feelings of irritability, frustration or restlessness
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities

Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions

Depression Treatment - How it Works
Even though we would all like to have a "quick fix", it most often is not like that. Working through a low mood episode can often be a process.
Depression treatment is often a combination treatment of medication and therapy. There is evidence-based research to show that medication and therapy are a powerful and effective way to treat depression. It's important to know that while medication alone can relieve symptoms it often does not address the root of the problems. When working with a counselor you will have the opportunity to explore the problem with a biopsychosocial approach, meaning that we look at the whole person rather than just a list of symptoms.
This approach recognizes that people do not experience symptoms in isolation. Each person brings a unique set of intersecting identities and life experiences - such as race, gender, sexuality, age, culture, socioeconomic status, family roles and health conditions - that influence how distress is experienced, understood and treated. These identities can shape exposure to stress, experiences of discrimination or privilege, and barriers to care, as well as be sources of resilience and meaning.
Therefore, treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Therapy that fits you personally can make all the difference in moving from struggle to strength. The key is flexibility. A therapist who listens carefully and adjusts the plan using evidence based strategies can help you feel more in control and hopeful.
